This is the hermaphrodite brig [it's also called a brigantine -- thanks, Matthew Jenkins!] that we practice our riggin' climbing on. The topmost yard [cross-bar] is the royal yard arm. It is about 90 or 95 feet from the water. The ropes you see underneath the yards are what we stand on, our arms around the yards or as nearly around them as we can get them.The little platform above the fore yard is the 'top' and in it are two holes about 1 1/2 ft square called lubbers hole. It is said land lubbers go thru the hole instead of around the outside. I'm a land lubber. I didn't take this picture. Dick


April 20, 1914 Dear Sister:

Please accept this little book of pictures from a negligent brother. I meant to send it to you so that you could have it by April the twelfth, but I didn't get it finished in time, so all I can do is ask your forgiveness and your acceptance.

I have tried to get pictures of the Hall and of the yard that we see most of, and that are most interesting to anyone who does not know much of the Academy.

Here and there are pictures of the animal life of the


Academy, and you can take them for what they are worth. I have done all that I could with the help of a camera to portray things as they are, and not as they probably ought to be.

Now please accept this little book with my best wishes for many happy returns of you birthday and I'll be your loving brother Dick.
